The Mat Finish: Not Your Drugstore Comb

The Mat Finish: Not Your Drugstore Comb

A note from Mathew — co-founder of Greenbriar Market + Refillery

Let’s talk about combs.
Specifically: why the ones you find at the drugstore are junk.

Most are made from cheap, injection-moulded plastic. They snap easily. They cause static. And they’re made from petroleum—so they stick around in landfills longer than most streaming contracts.

When we decided to launch our own line, we skipped the plastic entirely.

Why Cellulose Acetate?

Instead, we chose cellulose acetate—a material that’s been around since the 1800s, originally made from wood pulp and cotton fibres. Still plant-based, but behaves more like luxury:
✔️ Strong
✔️ Smooth
✔️ Flexible
✔️ Anti-static

It’s the same material used in high-end eyewear and hair accessories—and there’s a reason for that. It holds up. It looks good. And it feels even better in your hand.

The marbled finish? That’s not printed on. It runs through the material itself, which means every comb is one of a kind. No flaking, no peeling, no fading.

Meet Prue, Piper, Phoebe… and Paige

We carry three wide-tooth styles (plus one tail comb), and Shawn named them after the sisters from Charmed.
Because of course he did.

  • Prue: Our original wide-tooth hero, perfect for detangling and reducing frizz. Especially great for thick or curly hair.

  • Piper + Phoebe: Slightly different lengths and shapes, but all wide-tooth and built to glide without the snag-and-snap.

  • Paige: A precise, elegant tail comb for sectioning and styling.

They come in rotating limited-edition colourways—we hand-pick several at a time so the rack always feels fresh. They’re made overseas (Canada doesn’t manufacture cellulose acetate), but they’re made to last.

It’s a small upgrade. But one you’ll notice every day.
Just don’t ask me to explain the Charmed references again.
