Our latest endeavor, Aspera Cosmetics, embodies this philosophy by blending luxury with sustainability, creating skincare that's both indulgent and eco-conscious.

The Aspera Origin Story

The inception of Aspera was driven by a simple yet profound question: Why settle for less when we can create something better? As co-founders of Greenbriar Market + Refillery, Mat and I were on a constant quest to provide our customers with high-quality, sustainable skincare options. However, we often encountered challenges with existing products—unstable formulations, inconsistent deliveries, and even a toner that refused to stay mixed. These frustrations ignited a determination to develop something superior.

Our turning point came when a trusted Calgary-based skincare lab reached out to collaborate. Fueled by our experiences and a clear vision, we partnered with the lab to create skincare that not only delivers visible results but also aligns with our unwavering commitment to sustainability. And so, Aspera was born.

Luxury Meets Sustainability

From the outset, our vision for Aspera was clear: to craft products that are luxurious yet attainable, sustainable yet effective. We wanted each product to feel like a treat—from its silky textures to its gentle, inviting scents—while ensuring it delivered tangible benefits. Sustainability was non-negotiable, with refillable packaging serving as a cornerstone of the brand.

"We wanted products that not only performed but also made people feel good about using them," says Mat.

Developing Aspera was not without its challenges. With no prior background in skincare formulation, Mat and I immersed ourselves in the process, working closely with the lab to vet each ingredient. We delved into the science behind the formulations, ensuring every component served a purpose and met the high standards of our eco-conscious clientele.

A Personal Touch

Testing each product became a ritual for us, our family, and friends. And when the first moisturizers and serums began delivering noticeable results, we knew we had created something special. "Beautiful packaging matters," I often say. "It's the first connection people have with the product." Partnering with a talented designer and friend, we crafted branding that felt as elevated as the products themselves. The moment the first bottles and jars arrived on the shelves was unforgettable—a milestone that reflected our hard work and vision.

Calgary Roots, Nationwide Aspirations

Calgary's strong support for local businesses is woven into Aspera's identity. "Being local allows us to collaborate closely with the people who make and design our products," says Mat.

But our aspirations for Aspera extend far beyond Calgary. "We want Aspera to be a household name," Mat continues, "to offer luxurious, refillable skincare that everyone can enjoy."

Skincare as Self-Care

At its heart, Aspera is about more than skincare—it's about creating moments of care. 

"We want people to see results that make them feel like their best selves," says Mat. "Using Aspera should feel like an act of self-love."
